Heart of the Woods

Chainsaw Carvings

Although I am a native Nebraskan, I've lived and worked in the small town of Rhinelander, Wisconsin for the last 12 years.  I discovered one could use a chainsaw for more than supplying firewood, and now carving with a chainsaw has become a creative and physical challenge that hasn't diminished since I started three years ago.

After watching a carver turn out small bears for tourists in the Wisconsin Northwoods, I knew it was something I wanted to try. Eventually, I was introduced to carving by professional and full time carver, Brian Johnson.

Each year, I donate a carving to the Rhinelander Chapter of Trout Unlimited for their fund raising banquet.  All proceeds earned at the banquet help support projects which protect, preserve or rehabilitate wild trout habitat.

Working to create my own style, I seldom repeat a carving more than once, unless striving to improve on a previous attempt or unless a subject is especially enjoyable.

Always striving to improve, I've learned to incorporate nuances in posture that help the carving come alive.
